A couple weeks ago we had the absolute pleasure of capturing the 60th wedding anniversary celebration for the parents of Boston based designer Marc Hall. This nostalgic event was spectacularly designed and full of joy and laughter. We asked Marc for his inspiration behind this special event:
“The design inspiration for the entire event was to recall the days of my grandparents birthday parties which took place at my uncle Arthur Hall’s house… My grandparents shared a birthday in august and we would all gather in his backyard pool area… very fond memories… It was always a BBQ in the purest mid century style of the 1900’s… For this party I couldn’t provide the pool, but I wanted to host it in my atelier because, well, for 1 I had never hosted a family party, 2 most of my relatives had ever seen my store nor attended an event that I produced and 3 no matter if the weather cooperated or not, I knew we could open up my design studio to the open air…
My father being the youngest of 8 and now the patriarch as sole survivor of his family and along with my mom have 23 nieces and nephews just on my dads side of the family… As we began burying the elders, we often spoke of getting together (reunion) under happier occasions than funerals… so I approached my parents with the concept and they were hesitant at first feeling that they didn’t have a perfect marriage all those years to celebrate… I helped bring a healthier perspective to them by sharing that they made it through never the less and stayed true to each other the entire time keeping their marriage vows alive and relative as life partners for better or for the worse as they’re mantra… I thought that was a very powerful message to share with younger generations…
I wanted my atelier to have just the right amount of white blooms in honor of the white flowers they chose 60 years ago to adorn their reception with and I designed 2 botanical dream catchers which at one point during the celebration, they were brought to them so they could release all
negative energy from their past into the dream catchers (where Native Americans believed these evil thoughts and dreams would be caught forever) and blow well wishes for their future together where the dream catchers would release them into the universe…
The first song they danced to at their wedding reception was “because of you” typically the version they loved was sung by Tony Bennet but on their wedding day it was sung by a life long friend and confident to my mother… I mention the name of the song because one of the most poignant
moments of the affair was my toast to my parents… I took creative license with words from the song and spun it into my own poetic ode to them…”
